Benefits of Summer Reading

By Dr. Blanca Snyder
Aloha Summer! It’s that time to grab some books, find a cozy spot, and engage in reading! But wait…it’s summer, why are we reading! Isn’t this a time for a complete break from school?

Yes, of course, a break from the early morning rush, hectic schedules, and homework is critical over the summer. However, we know that reading is important to academic growth and the summer slide is a real phenomenon, where there is a loss of knowledge in math and in reading (Quinn & Polikof, 2017).

Research has also shown a direct link between reading and academic success. Reading independently leads to stronger skills in reading comprehension, critical thinking, verbal fluency, and general knowledge.

These benefits are not limited to independent readers, however. Reading aloud to your child also increases their early language acquisition, their vocabulary, and assists in their overall cognitive development. Plus, there is nothing like snuggling up with your kiddo and a book. So, whether you read alongside your child or read to your child, the benefits of reading are clear.

Enjoy picking out the books for your summer reading adventures. And what better time to inspire and foster a love of reading than on a long road-trip, airplane flight, or just the lazy, hazy days of summer!
