The specific responsibilities of the School Nurse include, but are not limited to, the following:

Provide direct professional nursing services, first aid, and emergency care to students and staff in response to the nursing assessment. All assessments are in accordance with professional standards, school policy and procedures, physician orders, and state and local mandates.

Assume responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and referrals for students with health concerns.

Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.

Assume authority, in the absence of a physician and or emergency personnel, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.

Manage a safe medication administration program, administering medications as needed with proper documentation.

Monitor students with chronic disease and collaborate with the student's physician and parents to create an individualized plan of care to maximize wellness.

Participate as a member of the Emergency Response team, responsible for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator training of staff, including monthly maintenance of AED’s on campus.

Maintain accurate, up-to-date cumulative health records on each student to assure compliance with state law regarding immunizations.

Implement school policy on exclusion and readmission of students related to compliance with immunization regulation or to infectious/contagious disease control.

Manage the collection and recording of every student’s health information, medical consents, physical exams, and if needed health care plans.

Maintain an accurate current list of student health concerns for distribution on a need to know basis.

Provide an organized and effective clinic by ordering supplies and offering an environment conducive to wellness.

Participate with school staff in developing, promoting, and implementing a healthy school environment.

Act as a resource to teachers on health-related subject matter of student specific needs.

Attend committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.

Provide information about blood-borne pathogen risk control and universal precautions to all staff in accordance with OSHA guidelines.

Collaborate with staff and families of students regarding health concerns.

Maintain communication with teachers, administrators, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the health and safety needs of students and school community.

Provide health services, information, and counseling in an effective and positive manner.
-
Complete Accident Report for student/staff when school injury requires medical attention.
-
Maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.

Maintain student visits in Magnus Student Medical Record computerized health record system.
-
Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Maintain contact with a professional nursing organization and utilize continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge

Participate as an active member of the school community, representing health/wellness

Maintain CPR instructor certification
